first things first: We're halfway through the 2020s

June 30th, 2025

Tomorrow is the first day of July, which means we're officially halfway through 2025 (and halfway through the 2020s!), and that's got me reflecting on my goals for the year.

Last December, I went viral when I shared my yearly goal-setting process and framework. The videos across my Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok received millions of views, and I got so many comments that Instagram temporarily disabled my account on New Year's Eve.

Clearly, a lot of you care about setting better goals. And more than that, about actually making progress throughout the year.

But if I’m being honest, I haven’t revisited my goals as often as I planned. Between a packed calendar and the emotional energy it takes to be a parent, it’s hard to find the time or motivation. Some days, after dealing with teething or tantrums, the last thing I want to do is crack open Notion and look at a long list of things I haven’t accomplished yet.

But if I zoom out a bit, this week isn’t just the halfway point of the year, it’s the halfway point of the decade. Which is completely wild to think about, but it also requires a different perspective on progress.

In 2020, I was still working in consulting, burnt out, living with my mother-in-law, and not at all sure how I would create the career and life of my dreams. If I compare that guy to who I am today, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of progress and pride towards how far I've come. And if you're in a similar spot, I'd remind you to zoom out a little. You’ve come a long way, maybe further than you realize.

Welcome to First Things First. I'm so glad you're here.
